Description from the seller
Gorgeous, early 19th-century silver sugar-sifter spoon of the highest quality, crafted by the highly renowned Amsterdam master silversmith Diederik Willem Rethmeyer.
This elegant centerpiece is fitted with a refined, original ebony handle, providing a beautiful, warm contrast with the gleaming silver. A rare object that breathes pure historical craftsmanship and makes a splendid addition to any antique silver collection.
Silversmith Diederik Willem Rethmeyer (active in Amsterdam between 1785 and 1811) was known for his exceptionally precise neoclassical designs and meticulous ajour sawing. His silver works are highly sought after today and are even included in major museum collections, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. This sugar-sifter spoon precisely showcases his mastery of fine sawing in the bowl of the spoon.
The piece is richly and clearly stamped on the outside of the ajour-sawed bowl. In addition to his master mark 'DWR' in a rectangle, the spoon bears the Amsterdam city mark (the three St. Andrew’s crosses) and the date letter 'w' for the year 1805. Additionally, the silver bears the Dutch tax assay mark: the recognizable letter 'J' in a shaded field (used between 1906 and 1953 for antique silver placed on the market).
