A guarantee for this precious fabric in William Morris style. Try it to believe it!
William Morris did not want decorations that were purely ornamental.
His aim was:
to bring nature and craftsmanship back into everyday life.
In industrial England of the time, houses filled with mechanical and repetitive decorations.
Morris reacted by creating patterns that look alive, drawn by hand, imperfect and organic.
“Willow Bough” was born precisely in this context:
a domestic, relaxing design, meant to be lived every day.
- Structure of the design
The pattern is built on a very precise logic.
Graceful willow branches
rise diagonally with a continuous movement.
The willow is a symbol of calm and fluidity.
Elongated and repeated leaves
Not realistic, but stylized.
Each leaf is almost a brushstroke.
No central focal point
There is no center.
It is an all-over pattern, designed for wide surfaces: walls, fabrics, curtains.
- Philosophy behind the design
Morris believed that:
“Everyday beauty improves people's lives.”
This design embodies three key principles:
1. Nature observed in reality
Morris studied real plants.
The willow was very present in English landscapes.
2. Rhythm and harmony
The pattern must soothe the eye.
Not strain it.
3. Craftsmanship
Lines not perfectly geometric.
One should perceive the hand of man.
An enchanting, delicate Art Nouveau texture in Morris style.
A characteristic style with creative design even in its simplicity.
William Morris (Walthamstow, March 24, 1834 – London, October 3, 1896) was a British artist and writer.
1. Continuous diagonal movement
The branches rise diagonally with regular rhythm.
There is no center: the eye glides. This makes it perfect for large surfaces (curtains, walls, bedspreads).
2. Soft modular repetition
The repeat is fluid and invisible.
You never see the module break → a sign of a well-designed pattern.
3. Leaf elongated like a brushstroke
Leaves are not realistic: they are stylized.
It is the Arts & Crafts signature: nature interpreted, not photographed.
Palette
dusty blue / faded denim
warm beige
sand-colored branches
It is a British countryside palette: calm, domestic, sophisticated without ostentation.
Morris was among the leading founders of the Arts and Crafts movement; he is considered a precursor of modern designers and had a significant influence on the architecture and architects of his time.
By many he is regarded as the father of the Modern Movement, although he was not an architect himself.
He founded a design studio in collaboration with the artist Edward Burne-Jones, and the poet and artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who deeply influenced the decoration of churches and houses in the twentieth century.
He also made an important contribution to the revival of traditional textile arts and the associated production methods.
