Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
Set of three copper engravings with fortification plans and military maps from the Seven Years' War, Kolberg & Treptow, produced by Raspischen Buchhandlung in Nürnberg, Germany, around 1760–1761, in good condition and partially hand coloured, each sheet sized 25 by 40 cm.
Description from the seller
Convolute of three historical, old-colored copper engravings with military maps and fortification plans from the time of the Seven Years' War.
The sheets show in detail fortified towns, terrain formations, rivers, roads and surrounding villages as well as the positions and movements of the involved troops. The military formations are highlighted by bold, period-appropriate area and line coloring in red, blue, green, pink and yellow.
Present are:
1. Kolberg / Kołobrzeg – Siege Plan
Plan of the fortified Pomeranian port town Kolberg, today Kołobrzeg in Poland, with city fortifications, harbor and river facilities as well as the surrounding troop dispositions. Particularly decorative through the color-emphasized fortification and the depiction of the Baltic Sea.
2. Treptow in Pommern / Trzebiatów – October 1761
Title:
“Plan der Stadt TREPTOW in Pomern, nebst der Russischen Belagerung derselben, im Mon: Oct: 1761”
Detailed depiction of the town Treptow on the Rega with the Russian siege positions. The sheet shows the fortified town in the center, the surrounding villages, roads, waterways, ridges and the color-marked military formations.
This sheet is bibliographically documented as an old-colored copper engraving from the “Schau-Platz des gegenwärtigen Kriegs”, Raspische Buchhandlung, Nürnberg, 1761.
3. Another military plan from the Seven Years' War
Depiction of a fortified town with surrounding troop dispositions, waterways, ridges and villages. The sheet contains an extensive “EXPLICATION” or explanation of the military situation and the drawn positions. Here, too, the opposing formations are distinguished by strong red and blue.
The three sheets are excellent examples of 18th-century military cartography and document not only fortifications but also concrete military operations of the Seven Years' War.
Technique and dating
3 copper engravings, with old coloring
Germany / Nuremberg
circa 1760–1761
At least the Treptow sheet from:
Schau-Platz des gegenwärtigen Kriegs
Raspische Buchhandlung, Nürnberg.
Age-related condition. Paper browned or slightly stained, with sporadic foxing and signs of use. Partly minor edge losses, creases or old fold marks. Along the edges there are older handwritten pencil notes.
The historical coloring remains conspicuously vivid. The actual map depictions are fully visible and largely legible.
All three sheets shown are sold together.
