Han Dynasty grey ceramic guardian statue, about 43.4 cm high (45.4 cm with base), polychrome with red tunic and chest plate, right hand with a central hole once held a weapon, used as funerary mingqi, provenance France from Galerie M.B.D., in very good condition with minor restoration to the neck and one leg, authentic original object.
Description from the seller
Very fine example of a gray ceramic statue from the Han Dynasty of ancient China. A Han Dynasty warrior figurine in gray pottery with a large portion of pigments painted. This painting clearly depicts the face, bearing a fixed expression.
This figurine of a soldier from the Han cohort wears a red tunic and a chest plate over it, his trousers are shortened and puffed. The right hand is clenched and has a central hole, which formerly held a weapon, such as a spear or a sword.
This statuette was used as funerary object or “mingqi” for a wealthy and influential Han person.
It is believed that such goods were needed for the deceased in the afterlife. Elaborate groups of funerary items were also a display of wealth and social status.
China, Han Dynasty, 206 BCE to 220 CE.
Very good condition, red, white and black pigmentation.
Height 43.4 cm (45.4 cm with the base) - width 16.3 cm
