Rare Dutch majolica plate dating to the 16th–17th century, complete with a wall-mount hole, 25.7 cm in diameter and 4.5 cm high, featuring an IMR monogram with a blue and yellow border and professionally restored.
Description from the seller
A fairly rare example of Dutch majolica from the 16th/17th century.
This ceramic piece is complete and was found during archaeological research.
Northern Netherlands, probably manufactured in the city of Rotterdam between 1500 and 1600.
Exceptional ceramic plate bearing the monogram IMR surmounted by a Latin cross surrounded by volutes, all circled in blue and yellow..
The rim features a double border rhythmically patterned with geometric motifs and fine circles.
In the center, a metal foot pierces the plate like an omphalos.
Dutch majolica is one of the rarest ceramics known to us, especially in a complete state. Dutch majolica is extremely rare to find in a complete condition; most often parts are missing.
It is estimated that only about 200 pieces have been transmitted over the centuries, most of which are in museum or foundation collections. This one is 100% complete.
A marvelous example of late Renaissance Dutch decorative art.
Beautifully bright colors. Time has no influence on majolica, so it still feels fresh after 400 years. The influence is clearly visible from Italy and Flanders.
For comparable examples, see the publication “Dutch Majolica & Delftware (1550-1700) from the Edwin van Drecht Collection,” pp. 30-33.
Apart from the fact that Dutch majolica is rare, it also has a historical peculiarity: it marks a new chapter in people’s lives and a blend of cultures.
Majolica has something magical and a particular allure that awes observers.
This must have been the case for people in the first half of the 16th century, when this luxury product was first introduced.
The product was exotic, innovative and decorated with vivid, brilliant colors on a tin-glazed background, in contrast to the brown, yellow and green lead-glazed ceramics that were common.
Dutch majolica was influenced by many cultures. The main influences were Hispano-Islamic culture and the Italian Renaissance.
Later, it was also influenced by imports of Chinese porcelain.
The plate has been professionally restored. Majolicas of this period have almost always been restored to some degree.
Dimensions: diameter 25.7 cm - height 4.5 cm - a hole allowed wall mounting.
