Rare Napoleon III side table - gracefully turned base - ebonized, ca. 1870

This round side table pairs a refined, graceful base with a sleek, deep-black finish — a timeless combination that fits virtually any interior, from classic to eclectic-modern.

DETERMINATION
• Style: Napoleon III / Late Victorian — recognizable by the turned ("bobbin turned") leg columns, the gracefully carved, pierced cross-connection between the legs and the characteristic scroll feet
• Period: probably second half of the 19th century, ca. 1860-1890
• Origin: presumably France or Belgium (Napoleon III-style furniture, popular in that region in this period)
• Material: solid hardwood, probably beech, ebonyed (black-stained/varnished)

About the suspected wood species: beechwood was the most common wood used for ebonising in the Napoleon III period. It has a fine, even grain which allowed the black finish to take evenly and the wood to pass convincingly for the costly imported ebony. Additionally, beech is excellent to turn — essential for the kind of graceful, bulbous leg details that characterize this little table — and, unlike true ebony, was readily available and affordable in France and Belgium. This combination of properties made beech the standard choice for this type of furniture.

On the black finish: the black layer is likely the result of ebonising — a technique frequently used in the Napoleon III period to make hardwood resemble the costly, exotic ebony. This was then a recognized and valued craft technique, not a cheap cover-up, and fits perfectly with the style and period of this table. It is therefore very possible that this black finish is original.

DISTINGUISHING UNDERFRAME
What makes this table truly special is the leg- and underframe construction.
Four slender, turned legs — each with a rhythm of swelling and constrictions, like beads on a string — converge in a pierced, cut-out cross-foot with stylized scroll motifs and diamond-shaped openings.
At the heart of this foot rises a graceful, urn-shaped finial, which visually connects the four legs and gives the piece a vertical accent.
Each leg ends in a turned, outward-curving foot — a detail that adds movement and lightness to the silhouette.
This combination of turned woodwork, pierced carving and curved feet calls for the precise work of an experienced turner and woodcarver, and is typical of the careful, decorative cabinetmaking of the 19th century.
