Description from the seller
Late Renaissance leather shoe/slipper, attributed to c. 1550–1600, presented in a glazed display frame
An exceptionally atmospheric historical object: a surviving early leather shoe or slipper traditionally dated to approximately 1550–1600, mounted as a three-dimensional display piece in a substantial glazed frame.
The shoe retains much of its recognisable original form despite the considerable age-related deterioration of the leather. The worn sole, upper and construction remain clearly visible, making it a fascinating example of historical footwear and a highly decorative conversation piece.
The object is presented within a deep shadow-box-style frame with a cream mount and gilt inner border. The dating “ca. 1550/1600” is written discreetly within the display.
Due to the age of the object, the leather naturally shows extensive wear, losses, cracking, deformation and deterioration. These characteristics are clearly visible in the photographs and form part of the historical character of the piece.
Condition of the mounting and frame: the shoe remains securely mounted. One of the fixing screws holding the shoe has become slightly loose. The shoe is presently still held securely and, when handled carefully, the display can be used as it is. The screw could also be tightened by carefully opening the rear of the display case. No such intervention has been undertaken by the seller.
The wooden frame itself shows several scratches and normal signs of age and handling. These cosmetic marks do not detract significantly from the overall presentation; when displayed on a wall or cabinet the object remains a striking and unusual decorative piece.
The frame allows the shoe to be viewed from both the front and, through the rear glazed opening, from underneath, providing an unusually interesting view of the historic construction and sole.
Material: apparently leather; frame of wood, glass, and mounting materials.
Condition: historical object with substantial age-related wear and losses; later display frame with scratches; one mounting screw slightly loose.
Included: complete framed display as photographed.
This is an unusual object for a collector of early European material culture, historic costume and footwear, or for an interior where a genuinely distinctive historical artefact is desired.
The photographs form an integral part of the condition description. Because of the fragile nature of the historical leather, the shoe should not be removed from the display unnecessarily.
