These photographs, taken over a period of forty years, bear witness not only to the evolution of Erwitt's gaze, but also to that of our own attitudes toward the beach.

The book includes commentary by Elliott Erwitt himself; his text offers a remarkable analysis of the beach and of his own work.

Published in 1991, this book gathers snapshots taken in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Brazil and elsewhere since the 1950s. It exudes a slightly retrospective atmosphere, giving the impression of having been published in the late 1970s.

Elliott Erwitt (born Elio Romano Erwitz) is a commercial and press photographer, famous for his candid black-and-white shots that capture ironic or absurd everyday situations; he is the master of the "decisive moment".
