Description from the seller

Large Victorian Silver-Plated Food Dome / Meat Cloche with Pheasant Finial – Martin, Hall & Co., Sheffield – England – c. 1890–1910

An impressive and unusually large Victorian silver-plated food dome (also known as a meat cloche or serving dome) by the renowned Sheffield silversmith Martin, Hall & Co., one of England's most respected manufacturers of high-quality silver plate during the late 19th and early 20th century.

This elegant example features a beautifully fluted oval form finished with a finely cast pheasant finial, resting on a naturalistic foliate base. The beaded border surrounding the lower edge adds refinement, while the engraved monogram on one side reflects the custom-made luxury tableware traditionally commissioned for distinguished private residences or country estates.

Produced in the heart of Sheffield, Martin, Hall & Co. built an international reputation for exceptional craftsmanship and durable electroplated tableware, supplying prestigious households, hotels and ocean liners throughout the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

The dome remains in good antique condition with an attractive original silvered surface. As expected from a serving piece over a century old, it shows light scratches and normal traces of use. At some point in its history, the original finial was professionally replaced with the present decorative pheasant handle; the former mounting points remain subtly visible. Has a few spots where the silver plating shows some wear. The silver plating remains remarkably well preserved, giving the dome a beautiful authentic patina. The reflection in the photo does not show the signs of use, which is why I am describing them.

A magnificent decorative statement for a dining room, sideboard or festive Christmas table, equally suitable for collectors of English silver plate and Victorian tableware.
