Mold - Antique brick mold now used as a wall shelf

A special and authentic piece of Dutch industrial heritage: a large wooden brick mould with no less than seven compartments, reinforced around the edges with dark metal fittings.

This sturdy mould was originally used in a brick factory for manufacturing bricks. In the traditional hand-forming process, clay was applied by hand into a wooden mould, after which the formed bricks were unmoulded, dried, and ultimately fired. That artisanal process is still used today in the production of special restoration bricks. Erfgoed Gelderland explicitly describes the use of a wooden mould in which the clay is applied by hand.

The brick industry played an important role in the Netherlands, especially along the major rivers. Around 1900 there were dozens of brick works just in Gelderland.

The present example is a remarkably large model, with a length of about 100 cm and seven compartments. The sturdy wooden construction is richly reinforced along the edges and sides with metal bands, plates and numerous fasteners. That purely functional construction gives the object its powerful industrial appearance today.

Nowadays, such an original factory mould is exceptionally decorative as a wall rack, letter rack, herb rack or display for small ceramics, collectibles and curiosities. When hung vertically, the object nearly takes on the character of a narrow industrial display cabinet.

Condition
Authentic used condition with clear signs of the original industrial use. The wood shows scratches, dents, discolorations, stains, old mounting traces and local wear. The metal fittings likewise show signs of use, discoloration and a naturally developed patina. These imperfections are appropriate to the age and original function and give the brick mould its distinctly well-worn character.

A characterful and decorative object in which the history of traditional Dutch brick production is still clearly visible today, particularly attractive as an industrial wall object or narrow display rack.
