AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

This special, beautiful vintage kokeshi is made by the famous Sadao Kishi.

Kishi (1932-1998) began making creative kokeshi dolls at the age of 22 and grew into one of the most influential sosaku artists. Largely thanks to his great and lifelong dedication, this style is recognized as a full-fledged art form.

Kishi-san won several renowned prizes, including the Prime Minister's Award and the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award. His design 'Spirit of Wheat' was also purchased by the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Japan.

In his work he often combined a self-developed branding and painting technique to create three-dimensional effects on the clothing of his kokeshi. He also liked to use floral motifs, including chrysanthemums. Attention focused on that, and on the hairpin. He liked to keep the faces restrained, with slanted eyes and a hint of a nose and lips.

This kokeshi is signed (hanko stamp) on the underside. It is a vintage kokeshi, showing signs of age but still in beautiful condition given its age. Look closely at the photos so you know what you are buying.
