Vintage Japanese Yanagiba & Deba Knife Set – “Seki Magoroku Ginju (関孫六銀寿)” & “Sakai Ichiji (堺一次)” – Traditional Japanese Fish Knives
An attractive pair of vintage Japanese kitchen knives, combining two of the most recognizable specialized blade forms in traditional Japanese fish preparation: a long and elegant Yanagiba and a substantial Deba.
Both knives bear Japanese maker inscriptions.
The long Yanagiba on the left is marked:
関孫六 銀寿 – Seki Magoroku Ginju
The Deba on the right is marked:
堺一次 – Sakai Ichiji
and retains an old handle label reading:
SAKAI SAKAIICHIJI
SPECIAL KITCHEN KNIVES
The contrast between the long, slender Yanagiba and the broad, substantial Deba makes this an appealing pair, while the surviving inscriptions and handle label add considerable vintage character.
1. Yanagiba – “Seki Magoroku Ginju” (関孫六銀寿)
The knife on the left is a traditional Japanese Yanagiba, distinguished by its long, narrow blade and pointed tip.
The Yanagiba is one of the classic specialized knives of Japanese cuisine, traditionally used for slicing prepared fish for sashimi and sushi. Its elongated blade allows the user to make long, smooth pulling cuts rather than short sawing motions. Takefu Knife Village
The blade bears the clearly recognizable inscription:
関孫六 銀寿
Seki Magoroku Ginju
Its long, elegant profile is characteristic of the Yanagiba form and provides a striking contrast with the heavier Deba included in this lot.
The knife is fitted with a traditional light-colored wooden Wa handle and black ferrule.
Approximate dimensions:
- Overall length: approx. 36 cm
- Blade length: approx. 23 cm
- Maximum blade width: approx. 3.0 cm
2. Deba – “Sakai Ichiji” (堺一次)
The knife on the right is a traditional Japanese Deba, recognizable by its broad blade, substantial heel and pointed profile.
The Deba is traditionally associated with breaking down and filleting whole fish, complementing the more delicate slicing role of the Yanagiba. Takefu Knife Village
The blade bears the inscription:
堺一次
Sakai Ichiji
An especially attractive surviving detail is the old label on the wooden handle, reading:
SAKAI SAKAIICHIJI
SPECIAL KITCHEN KNIVES
The surviving combination of the Japanese blade inscription and English-language handle label gives this vintage knife additional visual and collectible interest.
It is fitted with a traditional wooden Wa handle and black ferrule.
Approximate dimensions:
- Overall length: approx. 30 cm
- Blade length: approx. 17 cm
- Maximum blade width: approx. 5.0 cm
All measurements are approximate and have been estimated from the measuring tape visible in the photograph. Slight variations should be expected.
A Classic Yanagiba & Deba Combination
This pair brings together two traditional Japanese knife forms with distinctly different roles and proportions.
The Deba is the more substantial knife, traditionally used during the initial preparation and filleting of whole fish, while the long and slender Yanagiba is designed for the precise slicing stage, particularly for sashimi and sushi preparation. MADE in JAPAN.JP
Visually, the contrast is equally appealing: the long, graceful profile of the Seki Magoroku Ginju Yanagiba sits alongside the broader and more powerful profile of the Sakai Ichiji Deba.
Both retain their traditional wooden Wa handles and Japanese inscriptions, while the surviving SAKAI SAKAIICHIJI handle label on the Deba provides an additional period detail.
Condition

The condition includes:
- Age-related dirt and staining
- Rust / oxidation
- Scratches and scuff marks on the blades
The knives have not been fully cleaned, polished, restored or professionally sharpened and are offered in their present vintage condition.
Please examine all photographs carefully before bidding. The photographs form an essential part of the description and show the actual condition of the knives.

The combination of the “Seki Magoroku Ginju (関孫六銀寿)” Yanagiba and “Sakai Ichiji (堺一次)” Deba, together with the surviving SAKAI SAKAIICHIJI handle label, makes this an appealing pair for collectors of vintage Japanese cutlery, sharpening and restoration enthusiasts, and admirers of traditional Japanese culinary tools.
