Antique dark-glazed stoneware bottle from East Asia, Qing Dynasty (circa 1850–1900), about 13 cm high and 9 cm in diameter, weighing around 450 g, with a brown to near-black iron-rich glaze and provenance from a private collection.
Description from the seller
Antique East Asian Dark-Glazed Stoneware Bottle / Jar – Possibly Chinese or Korean – 19th Century
A very attractive antique East Asian stoneware vessel of compact, elegant form, covered in a deep dark brown to almost black iron-rich glaze.
The jar has a strongly rounded ovoid body, a short cylindrical neck with a pronounced rim and a flat, unglazed base revealing the dense fired stoneware body. Subtle throwing marks remain visible on the surface, together with small irregularities and variations in the glaze that are characteristic of traditional hand-made utilitarian ceramics.
The piece has a very tactile, understated appearance. Its dark glaze varies from black-brown to softer brown tones depending on the light, giving the surface considerable depth and character.
The exact origin is not documented, but the form, glaze and stoneware body are consistent with East Asian domestic pottery, possibly Korean. Comparable vessels were used for the storage and serving of liquids such as rice wine, sauces, oil, vinegar or medicinal preparations.
Dating: probably late 19th century or older
Origin: East Asia, possibly Korea or China
Material: high-fired stoneware with dark iron-rich glaze
Dimensions: approx. 13 cm high x 9 cm diameter
Weight: approx. 450 g
The vessel is in good antique condition with expected traces of age, minor surface wear and firing irregularities. No major restoration is apparent from visual inspection.
An appealing and authentic-looking example of traditional East Asian utilitarian ceramics, combining simple functional design with a beautifully aged dark glaze.
Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description.
