Description from the seller
Ancient Egyptian Faience Shabti
This ancient Egyptian faience shabti comes from the Third Intermediate Period and was made as a funerary object for the afterlife. The figure represents the deceased in mummified form and, according to ancient Egyptian belief, served as a magical substitute who was to undertake the tasks required for its owner in the afterlife.
Shabtis were among the most significant components of ancient Egyptian burial customs. According to Egyptian belief, these figures were activated through magical rituals and were to serve the deceased in the realm of Osiris, particularly by performing agricultural labor and other activities required in the afterlife.
During the Third Intermediate Period, faience shabtis were produced in large numbers and became an essential part of private burials. The 21st and 22nd Dynasties are known for the use of faience with a characteristic blue-green glaze, a color associated with renewal, fertility, and eternal life.
