Description from the seller
Masque Hemba Soko Mutu
The Soko Mutu mask, attributed to the Hemba of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, represents a highly stylized face with simian features, evoking the chimpanzee. The term Soko Mutu is generally interpreted as “brother of man.”
The mask is distinguished by a wide open mouth, an elongated nose, pronounced brow ridges, and a deliberately expressive, sometimes grimacing, expression. Some examples feature a dark patina particularly marked.
The Soko Mutu were associated with ritual dances and ceremonies, notably in a funerary context. Smaller specimens could be kept as protective objects.
It is also known by the name Mwisi Gwa So’o, an expression that can be translated as “spirit of the chimpanzee.”
