Description from the seller
Ancient Egyptian Terracotta Shabti
This ancient Egyptian terracotta shabti dates from the Third Intermediate Period and was created as a funerary object for the afterlife. The figure depicts the deceased in a mummy-like form and, according to ancient Egyptian belief, served as a magical substitute that would take on the tasks required for its owner in the afterlife.
Shabtis were among the most significant components of ancient Egyptian burial customs. In Egyptian belief, these figures were activated through magical rituals and were to serve the deceased in the realm of Osiris, particularly by performing agricultural work and other activities needed in the afterlife.
During the Third Intermediate Period, terracotta shabtis were produced in large numbers and became an essential part of private burials.
