The new Vatican divisional series, the first of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate, is directly inspired by the Pontiff’s coat of arms, reproduced on the cover with a plaster-like “gesso” effect and rendered in relief on an ivory background, while a deep blue characterizes the inscriptions and the highlighted graphic elements, recalling the colors of the two heraldic fields of the papal shield. The same chromatic pairing will later be used, in an even more evident form, in the new packaging line that will accompany the upcoming numismatic emissions. Not merely an aesthetic choice, but a true homage and a direct reference to the new pontificate. The coins housed inside feature an unprecedented alternation between the Pontiff’s effigy and the papal coat of arms: the effigy appears on the larger denominations, the coat of arms on the smaller ones, in a graphic project without precedent in the history of Vatican divisionales. The 2 euro coin also contains the distinctive elements of Leo’s coat of arms: the fleur-de-lis, symbol of purity and Marian devotion, and the burning heart pierced by an arrow above an open book, emblem of Augustinian spirituality and the power of God’s Word, capable of transforming the heart of man.
