Description from the seller
Roman Silver Mask Appliqué, Imperial Period (ca. 1st–3rd Century AD)
Cast silver decorative appliqué in the form of a stylised human or theatrical mask, modelled in high relief. The facial features are boldly rendered, with prominent brow ridges, deeply recessed eyes, a strong nose, and a simplified mouth, conveying an expressive and slightly schematic appearance typical of Roman decorative metalwork.
The reverse is hollowed and roughly finished, consistent with silver appliqués intended for attachment to another object or surface. The form and construction suggest use as a decorative fitting, possibly mounted on furniture, a wooden chest, a vessel, or architectural elements. Comparable silver mask appliqués are known from Roman domestic and public contexts, often serving ornamental or apotropaic functions.
The edges are irregular with losses and fractures, indicating ancient damage. No evidence of modern repair or restoration is visible.
