Description from the seller
Pair of elegant carved wooden figurative columns, depicting classical-style Caryatids, entirely carved in wood and gilded with gold leaf on a red bole ground, designed as architectural and decorative supporting elements.
The two male figures, of classical taste, are carved according to the Caryatid model, with arms raised above their heads to support the upper architectural element. The moderation of the body is characterized by a rendering of the anatomy, with a slight torsion of the torso and dynamic movement of the legs.
The faces, with idealized features, are framed by elaborate carved strands in their hairstyles. The body is wrapped in a draped garment, defined by deep incisions that emphasize its movement. Above the figures rise wooden capitals articulated in moldings and overlapped profiles.
The surface features gold leaf gilding on a red bole preparation, a traditional technique of ancient origin, used to confer greater depth and luminosity to the gilding. Abrasions and gaps in the surface allow appreciation in some spots of the underlying preparation, contributing to the antique patina of the whole.
Estimated period: first half of the 20th century, circa 1920–1950.
The dimensions refer to a single column.
Weight, however, amounting to 11 kg, is total.
They will be well packaged and adequately protected.
