MICHELIN: SCA Compagnie Générale des Établissements Michelin is a French company specializing in tire manufacturing, founded by brothers Édouard Michelin and André Michelin on May 28, 1889, developed for bicycle tires. Its headquarters are located in Clermont-Ferrand, capital of the Puy-de-Dôme department, in the geographic center of France. Along with Bridgestone, it is one of the largest tire manufacturers in the world.
The company has involvement in various categories of motorsport, mainly in the FIM Road Racing World Championship and the World Rally Championship.
History
In 1889, brothers Édouard and André Michelin ran a rubber factory in Clermont-Ferrand, France. One day, a cyclist whose pneumatic tire needed repair appeared at the factory; it was glued to the rim and took more than three hours to remove and repair, after which it had to be left overnight to dry. The next day, Édouard Michelin took the repaired bicycle to the factory yard to test it. After a few hundred meters, the tire failed. Despite the setback, Édouard was excited about the pneumatic tire, so he and his brother worked on creating their own version, one that did not need to be glued to the rim. Michelin was established on May 28, 1889, and in 1891 they obtained their first patent for a detachable tire that was used by Charles Terront to win the world’s first long-distance cycling race: the Paris–Brest–Paris in 1891.
The company’s mascot is called “Bibendum,” a white character made up of tires. This “tire man” was created in 1895, three years after the automobile was born. The swollen shape of this friendly figure has led to calls of michelines for excess fat around the waist in Spain, Brazil, and Chile. In the rest of Spanish-speaking America they are called wheels or tires. Bibendum was designed by Marius Rossillon, imitating the stacked tire silhouette of Michelin’s man. Its image has evolved throughout the history of the tire brand.
