Description from the seller
Hairmode is an unconventional photographic work by Japanese photographer Kaoru Ijima, exploring the relationship between the female body, hair, fashion and contemporary visual culture.
Rather than presenting the nude simply as glamour or conventional erotic photography, Ijima approaches the subject from a fashion and conceptual perspective.
The book questions the particular attention given to female body hair in Japanese visual culture, placing the nude within carefully constructed, fashion-oriented scenes. Everyday materials and unexpected visual elements are incorporated into the photographs, creating a tension between fashion imagery, the ordinary and the exposed body.
This approach makes Hairmode an interesting example of the experimental Japanese photography of the 1990s, where the boundaries between fashion photography, nude photography and contemporary art became increasingly fluid.
Kaoru Ijima is known for his distinctive fashion and conceptual photography and later became internationally recognized for his staged photographic series Landscapes With a Corpse.
A scarce and visually distinctive Japanese photography book from the 1990s, particularly interesting for collectors of Japanese contemporary photography, fashion photography and conceptual nude photography.
