Description from the seller

Orbis Terrarum Antiquus (1853)

Title
Reichard / Forbiger – Orbis Terrarum Antiquus – 5th edition 1853 – complete atlas with 20 colored maps. The frontispiece is missing.

Description
Christian Gottlieb Reichard (1758–1837)
Orbis Terrarum Antiquus
Quondam in usum juventutis descriptus
5th Edition (Editio quinta), newly edited and commented by Albert Forbiger.
Nuremberg, Friedrich Campe & Son (Fr. Campe et fil.), 1853.

A complete copy with all 20 engraved and contemporarily border-colored maps.

Large-format historical atlas on the geography of the ancient world. The complete sequence of maps covers the ancient world as well as Hispania, Gallia, Britannia, Germania, Italy and Rome, Greece and the Peloponnese, Macedon and Illyria, Dacia/Sarmatia/Scythia, Asia Minor, Armenia and Syria, Palestine, India, Egypt, as well as Africa and Arabia. Several plates include additional detail- and city-plans, including Rome, Jerusalem, Alexandria, Carthage, and Athens.

The maps are printed on stout paper and feature colored border coloring. At the bottom edge of the plates there is the imprint “Nürnberg, Fr. Campe et fil.” and the designation “Orbis terrarum antiquus” along with the plate number. On several maps the engraver J. A. Bühler is named as well.

The complete set of 20 maps was checked individually.

A particularly interesting feature is a handwritten entry on the front flyleaf dated “8 December 1861.” It provides an early ownership/provenance note only a few years after the atlas appeared. Other historical handwritten names are found on the same leaf.

Condition
Complete map stock with 20 maps. The printed title page is not present.

Age-appropriate, unrestored condition. The maps show varying degrees of foxing, paper browning, and age-related discolorations, especially at the margins. The printed map images themselves are largely clear and well preserved. The historical border coloring is bold and attractively preserved.

The center folds show the usual signs of use for a large-format atlas. There are no significant losses within the map images on the included sheets.

Plain brown linen/fabric binding with clear age- and wear-related traces. The atlas has not been cleaned or restored; paper, coloring, and historical signs of use are in a grown state.

Please consider the numerous photos as an essential part of the condition description.
