Russian Orthodox brass icon of the Holy Face of Christ – 19th century
Russian Orthodox brass icon depicting the Holy Face of Christ, also known as the Mandylion or Not Made by Hands (Spas Nerukotvorny). The icon is produced in relief and has a beautiful dark patina.
Description
In the center is the face of Christ depicted on a cloth, surrounded by a cruciform halo. On either side, the cloth is held by angels. At the bottom there is a Cyrillic inscription referring to the depiction of the Not Made by Hands Verlosser.
According to Orthodox Christian tradition, this image of Christ arose miraculously without the intervention of a painter. This depiction grew into one of the most important Christ iconographies within the Eastern Orthodox Church.
The icon is cast in brass and provided with an integrated hanging eye. The recessed background and dark patina form a strong contrast with the higher, polished parts of the relief through use.
