Russian Orthodox brass icon with a depiction of the Descent into Hades and the Resurrection of Christ, executed in relief.
Description
Central is Christ within a mandorla, depicted during his descent into the realm of the dead. He reaches out his hand to a kneeling figure, traditionally identified as Adam, whom Christ raises from the tomb. Surrounding him are various Old Testament figures and saints depicted as witnesses to salvation.
Above the scene, stylized heavenly elements are visible. The iconography refers to Christ's victory over death and, within the Russian Orthodox tradition, forms an important depiction of the Resurrection.
The icon is cast in brass and provided with a broad profiled frame. The recessed portions have developed a dark patina, making the relief stand out clearly.
