Russian Orthodox brass icon of the Transfiguration of Christ – 19th century
Russian Orthodox brass icon depicting the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor, rendered in relief.
Description
In the center Christ is shown standing in a radiant mandorla. On either side appear the prophets Moses and Elijah, who, according to the gospel narrative, speak with Christ during the Transfiguration.
At the bottom are the apostles Peter, James and John depicted, who, overwhelmed by the divine manifestation, have fallen to the ground. The composition portrays the moment when Christ reveals his divine glory to his disciples.
The icon is cast in brass and equipped with a profiled border. At the top there is an integrated hanging eye with a small religious relief illustration. The surface has developed a natural patina through age and use.
