Russian Orthodox brass icon of the Holy Trinity – 19th century
Russian Orthodox brass icon depicting the Holy Trinity, shown as the three angels who appeared to Abraham at the oak of Mamre.
Description
In the center are three winged angels with nimbuses around a table. The depiction refers to the Old Testament story of Abraham's Hospitality, which within Orthodox iconography is interpreted as a prefiguration of the Holy Trinity.
In the background, various elements from the biblical narrative are rendered in relief, including architecture and the Oak of Mamre. Around the depiction runs a decorative border with ornaments and inscriptions.
The icon is cast in brass and at the top features an integrated hanging loop with relief decoration. The surface has developed a warm, dark patina that accentuates the recessed parts of the composition.
