Description from the seller
Russian Orthodox brass travel triptych with the Mission of Christ in the Temple – 19th century
Russian Orthodox triptych in brass, executed as a folding travel icon. The central panel shows the Mission of Christ in the Temple (Meeting of the Lord / Presentation), surrounded by various saints depicted on the side wings.
Description
The central panel depicts the presentation of the Christ Child in the temple. Mary and Joseph bring the child to the temple, where he is received by the elderly Simeon and the prophetess Anna. The scene refers to the encounter between Christ and Simeon, an important feast in the Orthodox Church.
Below the main scene is a row of four saints. The two hinged side wings are each divided into three smaller registers with different saints and religious figures in relief. Thus the triptych comprises an extensive collection of devotional images.
The whole is cast in brass and can be folded, making it suitable as a travel icon for personal devotion. At the top there is an integrated suspension hole with floral decoration. In the recessed areas there are local traces of color visible.

19th century
Material
Brass
Origin

Condition
In decent condition with clear signs of aging and use. The brass shows wear, discoloration, patina and localized oxidation traces. Traces of the original color decoration are locally preserved.
