Chinese blue and white porcelain deep saucer from the Kangxi period (c. 1662–1722) in a Privécollection, decorated with the famous Aster pattern underglaze blue, with a repaired rim and glaze frittings along the edge, and measuring about 26 cm in diameter and 5 cm deep.
Description from the seller
Large Chinese blue-and-white porcelain saucer dish with the 'Aster pattern' – Symbol mark – China – Kangxi period (1662–1722)
Chinese blue and white porcelain 'Aster pattern' saucer dish – Symbol mark – China – Kangxi period (1662–1722)
Auction description:
An impressive, deep Chinese porcelain saucer dish, expertly hand-painted in dark underglaze cobalt blue, dating from the Kangxi period (1662–1722).
The central medallion features the famous and highly sought-after ‘Aster pattern’ (aster/ chrysanthemum flowers) amidst finely incised scrollwork (karakusa). The wall is relief-molded with lobes (moulded panels), each compartment equipped with a stylized aster on an upward stem with pointed leaves. This decorative motif repeats on the exterior of the dish.
On the underside, within a double concentric circle, lies an underglaze blue symbol mark (stylized lingzhi / sprig of flowers), characteristic of high-quality export porcelain from the Jingdezhen workshop around 1700.
Specifications:
Origin: China
Dynasty / Period: Qing Dynasty, Kangxi (ca. 1690–1715)
Decoration: Aster pattern in underglaze blue
Mark: Symbol mark within a double ring
Diameter: ca. 26 cm
Height: ca. 4 cm
Condition report:
Restoration: The dish shows an old repair to the rim (approximately near the 10–11 o’clock position). The crack pieces are glued and in the vicinity of two flower panels there is an old overpaint/retouch (visible on both the front and back). This restoration has become dull and chalky over the decades.
Edge: Light, age-appropriate glaze fritting (moss-like specks) along the contour rim, typical of this early and thin-walled porcelain type.
Other: No other hidden flaws; the glaze and the cobalt blue in the central field are bright and well preserved.
Important: Please examine all attached photos carefully and in detail. They form an essential and integral part of the condition description and show the restoration and overall state exactly as it is.
