It was as early as 1930 that Brassaï began to take an interest in graffiti. He published several of his photographs in Minotaure magazine from that time onward, accompanied by the first of his commentaries, which he would develop, text after text, until his death, alongside his photography. This book aims to publish as much as possible of these two approaches, starting with the book on graffiti that Brassaï published in 1960 in Germany and France, following a series of exhibitions of his photographs organized since 1956 in New York, London, Milan, Baden-Baden, Frankfurt, Hanover, and Paris at the Daniel Cordier gallery. Enriched with several fragments of previously unknown texts by Brassaï, the book published today also reproduces pages from his notebooks in which the photographer noted and then tracked, with the help of sketches, the presence and transformation of graffiti on the walls of Paris. As such, this publication will allow readers to grasp Brassaï's conception of this art form as closely as possible. His photographs, like his texts, skillfully reveal the magical invention of the great themes which, from wall to wall, summarize all of life: birth, love, death, and whose "primitivism", after that of Negro art, was to have a lasting influence on the "mural" inspiration of artists like Miro, Dubuffet or Tapies. A major work by Brassaï, Graffiti brings together the photographs and texts that he devoted to this street art.
