Pair of gilded bronze Empire amphora vases from France, dating to circa 1810–1820, each 29 × 13 cm, in very good condition with minor signs of wear for their age.
Description from the seller
An elegant pair of gilded bronze amphora vases from the Empire period, manufactured in France at the beginning of the 19th century, circa 1810–1820.
Each vase has a neoclassical form with a flaring neck, crowned by a broad circular rim finely fluted with gadroons and leaf motifs. The body is flanked by two slender, gracefully curved handles, decorated with stylized plant motifs and palmettes, characteristic of the decorative repertoire of the Empire style.
The lower portion of the vases is particularly richly decorated with finely fluted acanthus leaves and palmettes. Each vase rests on a baluster-shaped foot with leaf decoration, placed on a square base and a tiered pedestal, finished with a botanical frieze.
The quality of the chasing work is further emphasized by the handsome interplay between matte and polished gilded surfaces. This creates subtle contrasts that beautifully reveal the relief of the ornamentation.
The vases are composed of several parts, manufactured and assembled according to the traditional bronze casting techniques of the period. The undersides retain their original wooden lids and old handwritten inscriptions.
Thanks to their harmonious proportions, fine symmetry and refined neoclassical decoration, these vases form a beautiful example of French decorative art from the Empire period.
