Specimen Cymatium femorale, 55 mm, GEM condition, original/offiziell, from the Bahamas, year 1982.
Description from the seller
Scientific name: Cymatium femorale (Linnaeus, 1758) – in the German-speaking world known as the Winged Triton or Square Triton shell, in English as Angular Triton.
Product details & quality
Size: 55.0 mm (Rare dwarf size / Dwarf specimen! The regular average size is about 80–150 mm. Specimens around 55 mm in mature, perfect form are hardly available on the market).
Quality: GEM (Absolute top condition. The distinctive wing-like knot ridges (varices) and the fragile, slightly curved siphonal canal are completely undamaged. No beach wear, outstanding natural luster).
Special feature: Perfectly developed shell aperture (lip) despite the small dimensions.
Origin & collecting data
Region: Western Atlantic & Caribbean (main occurrences range from South Florida through the Bahamas and the West Indies to Brazil)
Habitat: Shallow-water areas, sandy bottoms, mollusk banks and reef lagoons in depths from the tidal zone to about 50 meters.
Biology & life habits
The Winged Triton belongs to the family of triton shells (Cymatiidae / Ranellidae). It is one of the most visually striking representatives of its family:
Shell characteristics: The spiral whorls form a distinctive, almost triangular “terrace” structure. Each whorl carries prominent axial ribs with thick knots, giving the aperture a jagged, wing-like appearance. The coloration typically ranges from creamy white, through yellow, to deep orange or brown tones.
Lifestyle: The snail is predatory (carnivorous). With the help of its powerful radula (rasp tongue) it pries open the shells of other invertebrates. Its diet mainly includes bivalves (two-shelled mollusks) as well as echinoderms such as starfish and sea urchins.
Color variability: The coloration is highly variable, ranging from whitish-gray to deep black, usually interspersed with attractive, spiral bands in brown, yellow or white.
