Description from the seller
Exceptionally signed copy on the title page by Mimmo Jodice (1934 - 2025), unique and unavailable on the internet in a signed copy and extremely rare in an unsigned copy. 302 pages and more than 150 color photographs, Italian text by Fausto Zevi accompanied by a map showing the placement of monuments. Black cloth bindings with the title embossed in white on the back, illustrated dust jackets and case. In excellent condition, practically like new.
Neapolis is ancient Naples: the history of Naples spans more than twenty-eight centuries, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Under the name Parthénope (in ancient Greek: Παρθενόπη / Parthenópē), it was founded in the 8th century BC on the Pizzofalcone hill by Greeks from the neighboring city of Cumae[]. Two centuries later, it was rebuilt under the name Neápolis and rapidly grew to become one of the major commercial, cultural, philosophical, and political centers of Magna Graecia, also highly respected by the Romans, under whom it remained a major cultural center and played an essential role in the joint development of Greco-Roman civilization.
Mimmo Jodice was born in Naples, where he has always lived, and was therefore in close proximity to some of the most important archaeological sites of Greco-Roman antiquity. These two volumes constitute a fine homage to Pompeii and its rediscovered splendor through the photographs of a great master who knew how to position himself in the right place each time to highlight the ruins in the best perspective and to photograph the statues under the most expressive lighting.
Mimmo Jodice is one of the greatest Italian photographers of the 20th century and has gained international recognition almost worldwide. A self-taught photographer born in 1934 in Naples, he began his artistic activity in the mid-1960s with visual experimentation, pursued research into cutouts and collages of images, and then evolved in the 1970s toward social critique related to the miserable living conditions of Naples’ population, a city that was lively and popular, and in the 1980s toward a silent evocation of the metaphysical landscape and Mediterranean archaeology, with a creative language that reflects on time, light, and the act of seeing itself. Mimo Jodice has presented his work in France on several occasions, notably at the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie d'Arles, as well as during a retrospective at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris in 2010, which led to the publication of an important catalogue.
