Small Roman terracotta jug from the Eastern Roman Empire dating to c. 2nd–3rd century AD, with a globular body, short constricted neck, vertical strap handle, and incised horizontal bands on the shoulder, measuring 14 × 11 × 11 cm and in fair condition.
Description from the seller
Small single-handled pottery jug made of reddish-brown terracotta, featuring a globular body, a short constricted neck, and a slightly flaring rim. A vertical strap handle connects the shoulder to the neck, while the shoulder is decorated with incised horizontal bands encircling the vessel.
This vessel belongs to a common type of small utilitarian and storage jugs widely used throughout the eastern Mediterranean during the Roman Imperial period. Such jugs were typically employed for storing and pouring small quantities of oil, wine, water, or other liquids in both domestic and funerary contexts.
The surface exhibits significant earthen encrustations, signs of use, and dark firing or burial-related discoloration. The authentic archaeological patina is well preserved and contributes to the vessel's historical character.
Condition: Very good archaeological condition with age-related wear, earthen deposits, and minor surface abrasions consistent with long-term burial. The modern metal suspension chain is not part of the ancient object.
Provenance: Formerly in the Madeleine & Erich Dammann Collection, Germany. Acquired during the owners' extensive travels between 1950 and 1970. Documented in Germany by 1970 and subsequently retained in continuous family ownership.
