AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Circa 1890. Cristallerie Legras &Cie at St-Denis. France

Magnificent ancient large roller vase in japonisant Yokohama style, from the famous Opaline series which is directly blown in the glass mass known as "rice paste", with a soft pinkish-white tint, entirely decorated with a rich and abundant japonisant design, very delicately painted and hand-glazed in a superb red-orange monochrome, subtly enhanced with gold.

Of remarkable finesse, its decoration consists of a multitude of charming Japanese fans richly adorned with flowers, water lilies, dragonflies and stylized foliage, accompanied by delicate birds perched on branches, medallions, screens and stylized arabesques that intertwine harmoniously all around the vase.

One of the faces is also adorned with an imposing oriental medallion bearing the stylized character for "Longévité" (壽), a traditional symbol of long life and prosperity, adding an additional symbolic dimension to this extraordinary composition.

As the piece is turned, the decoration gradually reveals itself and new details appear, forming a wonderful japonisant panorama, as rich as it is poetic.

François Théodore LEGRAS created this series of japonisant-decorated models at the end of the 19th century to meet the demand of this new fascination in Europe for Japan between 1880 and 1890, a model that won great success at the Paris Universal Exposition in the late 19th century, which would deeply influence the decorative arts of this period and herald the beginnings of Art Nouveau.

Rare specimen perfectly listed and authenticated in the famous catalog Répertoire Raisonné "Legras Verrier" Cylindre Yokohama, series 3045

Fine height of 250 mm with a very beautiful volume.

Vase in beautiful condition for its great age. Note just a few inevitable small signs of use due to time, perfectly coherent with the time passed and the piece’s oldness — remember that this vase is now over 130 years old! Making this very beautiful collection piece from this famous master glassmaker of the late 19th century a unique and rare piece that will surely enhance your interior and fascinate your guests!

Under the base there is a lovely trace of the pontil from the blowing rod, cut with pliers, moving testimony to the old manufacturing techniques and the remarkable artisanal know-how of the glassmakers of Saint-Denis.

Very beautiful Art Nouveau period collector’s piece from the late 19th century from the Nancy School. Daum Nancy era, Gallé, Le verre Français, Schneider, Lalique...
