Description from the seller
Massive silver gilt chalice – A.E. Jones – Birmingham, 1940
Chalice in solid English sterling silver 925/1000, made by the silversmith Albert Edward Jones (A.E. Jones), a recognized figure in British silverware from the Arts & Crafts movement.
The chalice presents a sober and balanced line: a wide flared cup with gilded interior (vermeil), resting on a stem with a flattened knob and a wide circular foot, slightly domed. A finely engraved cross on the foot underscores its liturgical purpose.
The reverse of the foot bears a series of perfectly legible British hallmarks: A.E.J: master mark of Albert Edward Jones
Anchor: Birmingham Assay Office
Lion passant: Sterling silver at 925/1000
Date letter: hallmark corresponding to the year 1940
A piece of English religious metalwork of fine quality, interesting both for the reputation of its silversmith and for the sobriety of its design.
Good overall condition, with some light signs of use and micro-scratches consistent with age. Interior gilding of the cup well preserved.
The photos form an integral part of the object description and complement its presentation. They allow you to assess its condition and features. Please examine them carefully before any bidding
The item will be carefully packed and shipped with a tracking number, to ensure fast and secure delivery.
