Description from the seller

Russian Nativity Icon of the Virgin – Moscow – 18th century + Certificate of authenticity

Important Russian icon representing the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God, painted in tempera on a wooden panel and enriched with a large repoussé silver riza, chased and engraved.

The composition unfolds several episodes around the birth of the Virgin: at the center, Saint Anne, newly delivered, is surrounded by maids, while the scene of the Child’s bath occupies the lower part. Several sacred figures take their place in an architecture that is particularly elaborate, characteristic of traditional Russian iconography.

The riza, richly worked with scrolls and vegetal motifs, reveals the essential parts of the painting and features several saints in relief on the sides. Inscriptions in Cyrillic characters are engraved in the upper part.

IDENTIFICATION OF THE WORKSHOP AND GUILD

Macro-photographic analysis of the metals reveals a complete regulatory set of four official seals of the Russian Empire

1) The Master Goldsmith: Mark “В.И” in Cyrillic. This is the workshop of Vasily Ivanov (Василий Иванов), a renowned Moscow craftsman specializing in liturgical metalwork in the latter half of the 18th century.

2) The Alderman (Senior Warden of the Guild): Heart-shaped stamp bearing the letters “А·О / П”. This official control mark belongs to Afanassy Petrov (Афанасий Петров), who served as certifying juror in Moscow at that precise date.

3) The City: A mark depicting Saint George slaying the dragon, confirming without ambiguity that the piece was made within the Moscow guild.

4) The Metal Title: A historical Russian alloy of 84 zolotniks (equivalent to 875/1000 silver), enhanced with mercurial gilding of the period (vermeil).

5) The Date: Engraved numbers confirming the year 1770.

Dimensions: 32.5 × 27 cm.

The icon bears the marks, cracks, lifts and wear visible in the photographs, consistent with its age. The riza also shows a patina and signs of long use. The reverse retains its wooden panel and crossbars. The icon has undergone restorations which may seem perfectly acceptable in light of its “age.”

The work is accompanied by its certificate of authenticity and sale issued by the auction house and licensed cultural property operator. The certificate describes the work as a “Icon on wood, with gilded silver frame, Nativity of the Mother of God,” originating from a Moscow workshop, Russia, dated approximately 1770, and notes silver 875 ferrule.

Photos are an integral part of the description of the objects and complete their presentation. They allow you to assess its condition and characteristics. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.

The item will be carefully packaged and shipped with a tracking number to ensure fast and secure delivery.
