Rare 18th‑century copperplate engraving by an anonymous German engraver, titled Vorstellung der scharpfen und blutigen Battaille so den 23. Iuly A° 1759, depicting the Kay (Kije), Palzig (Pałck) and Züllichau (Sulechów) battle in the Seven Years’ War, uncoloured, 29 x 38 cm, in excellent condition and described in Cronache storiche della Guerra dei Sette Anni, shipped by courier.
Description from the seller
Rare, dramatic, and historically significant antique copperplate print (etching/burin) published in 1759. The print offers a detailed and spectacular depiction of the "fierce and bloody battle" of Kay (Züllichau) which occurred on July 23, 1759 in the midst of the Seven Years' War. The complex scene portrays up close the brutal clash between troops, with Russian and Prussian horsemen confronting each other amid the smoke of cannons and muskets. In the central and upper section, the rigorous geometric arrangement of the respective regiments and infantry battalions on the battlefield is illustrated, while in the background to the right the topographic profile with the towers of the city of Züllichau (Züllichan) emerges. In the lower part, a dense section of text in early German serves as a legend and explanatory diary of the military events and the movements of the generals. A piece of great documentary interest, extraordinarily inked and very rare on the antique market, perfect for scholars and militaria collectors of the eighteenth century.
