Description from the seller
Antique 4-piece Biedermeier Opaline / Alabaster Glass Set with Blue Glass Serpent
(Rigaree) – circa 1850
Description
A beautiful, extremely elegant and rare 4-piece glass set in the classic Biedermeier style, dating from the mid-19th century (ca. 1840-1860).
During this period, these sets were produced by leading glass factories in Bohemia, Schachtenbach in southern Germany, or by the prestigious French crystal producer Baccarat.
The set is finished in semi-transparent milky white opaline glass (also called alabaster glass).
The most striking feature is the handcrafted, contrasting spiral-shaped snake (rigaree) in bright transparent blue glass.
The blue snake adorns the goblets and gracefully winds around the neck of the carafe, where it blends seamlessly into the handle.
The set consists of:
1x Pouring Carafe:
Equipped with an elegantly shaped spout and a blue glass handle that continues into the spiral.
Height: 26 cm.
2x Drinking Goblets / Glasses:
Slim goblets with the characteristic blue glass ring at the base.
Height: 12.5 cm.
1x Small Bowl / Sugar Bowl:
A decorative dish with a lovely wavy (pleated) rim, finished with a blue trim.
Height: 11.5 cm.
This type of glassware is a prized collectible due to the refined technique required to manually apply the hot glass snake onto the opaline glass.
An absolute showpiece for collectors of antique 19th-century European glassware.
