Art Deco silver powder compact with guilloché enamel, made in Austria, silver content 0.935, dimensions 1×1×1 cm, in good used condition.
Description from the seller
An Art Deco powder compact with blue guilloché enamel. The inside is marked Made in Austria 935 sterling silver. Condition is good, although there is no mirror in the case. Furthermore, a unique and beautiful piece for the collector! Please see all the photos (also for the dimensions). They are part of the description. Will be properly packaged and shipped, of course.
The powder compact is a box in which cosmetics in the form of powder are kept. After World War I, the powder compact became increasingly more compact and portable. The woman gained more opportunities outdoors and also wanted to touch up her makeup on the go. The appearance of the powder compact was important; the powder compact and the act of powdering became status symbols.
Compact powder cases were strongly influenced by prevailing fashion; for example, the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922 spurred Egypt-inspired obelisks, sphinxes, and pyramids. Jewellers such as Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany, and Cartier began producing metal and silver cases with the possibility of carrying other small items.
Although powder compacts remained widely produced into the sixties, their popularity declined as the cosmetics industry increasingly used plastic containers that were discarded once the powder was used up.
