Macedonian Æ bronze coin from Thessalonica, dating ca. 150–100 BC, 22 mm in diameter and 6.63 g, with a wreathed Dionysos head on the obverse and ΘΕΣΣΑΛΟΝΙΚΗΣ with a goat standing right on the reverse.

Macedon, Thessalonica.
Ca. 150-100 BC.
Æ (Bronze, 22 mm, 6.63 g).
Obv: Wreathed head of Dionysos right.
Rev: ΘΕΣΣΑΛΟΝΙΚHΣ. Goat standing right; monogram to left.
Reference: HGC 3.1, 723.
Founded by Kassandros around 315 BC and named after his wife, Alexander the Great’s half-sister, Thessalonica became a leading Macedonian port. During the second century BC, it emerged as the capital of Roman Macedonia. Its harbour and position on the Via Egnatia connected maritime trade with routes across the Balkans, helping the city prosper as an administrative and commercial centre under Roman rule.
