Illyria, Apollonia.
Ca. 250-50 BC.
Drachm (Silver, 18 mm, 2.93 g).
Obv: Magistrate’s name in Greek above cow standing left, head turned back towards suckling calf standing right beneath; varying control symbols in the fields.
Rev: ΑΠΟΛ, abbreviated ethnic of Apollonia, and second magistrate’s name in Greek around a double stellate pattern within a double linear square; additional control symbols on some issues.

Apollonia was founded by Greek settlers from Corinth and Corcyra near the Adriatic coast of modern Albania. It became an important centre of trade between the Greek world and the Illyrian interior. Its cow-and-calf coinage followed a tradition inherited from Corcyra, and its silver drachms circulated widely across the Balkans during the Hellenistic period and the expansion of Roman influence.
