Among connoisseurs, the Bavarian S3/6 is regarded as one of the most successful and beautiful locomotives in the world. The extraordinary, sharply tapered cab, the conical smokebox doors, and the mighty cylinder block were the characteristic construction features of this popular series. Thanks to economical coal consumption and good running characteristics, it was convincing in daily service. The two inner high‑pressure cylinders and the two outer low‑pressure cylinders work on the middle driving axle. With this four-cylinder drive, very good thermodynamic efficiency is achieved. The Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG) adopted these machines as series 18.4. 19 examples were even sent to France and Belgium. The Bundesbahn retired the last locomotive of this successful series in 1960. Since 1996 S3/6 3673 has been running at the Bavarian Railway Museum in Nördlingen. source.
