GEBRÜDER HEPP, PFORZHEIM – LARGE STAND-SCHIFFER/SEKT COOLER FROM THE KEMPINSKI ENVIRONMENT, BERLIN
Large and representative stand champagne/ sparkling wine cooler made from historic hotel silver, crafted by Gebrüder HEPP, Pforzheim.
The imposing cooler has a height of approximately 60 cm, a foot diameter of about 28 cm, and a weight of around 3.0 kg. The goblet-shaped body sits on a wide, conically formed base and features side supports as well as a broad handle.
On the underside is the original maker’s mark:
“GEBRÜDER HEPP 90 – PFORZHEIM”
“Gebrüder HEPP 90” refers to the historic hotel silver developed by HEPP, i.e., silver-plated metal with a thin layer of silver. HEPP describes this process as its historic invention of hotel silver. (HEPP)
A noteworthy feature is the historic Kempinski grape mark affixed to the cooler, associated with the so-called “Hitler grapes” signet. This signet was used after the forced “Aryanization” of the M. Kempinski & Co. company in 1937. The historic Kempinski restaurant at Kurfürstendamm 27 had existed since 1928. (Berlin history)
According to the consignor, the cooler comes from the Kempinski operation on Kurfürstendamm in Berlin. The provenance is attributed based on the existing historic Kempinski mark; a separate written inventory or provenance confirmation is not available.
The use of HEPP hotel silver in Kempinski establishments is historically documented. For example, the Jewish Museum Berlin owns a silvered HEPP spoon with the inscription “Vaterland Kempinski,” dated 1928–1937. (Jewish Museum Berlin)
