Description from the seller
Description
Among the areas new light has been shed upon are: the lives of all the members of this illustrious family; the supposed invention of oil painting by Jan; and the brothers' collaboration on the masterwork The Ghent Altarpiece (The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb). Special attention is given to Jan, the better-known of the two; an extensive listing and analysis of his paintings is presented.
Contents
Jan van Eyck (ca. 1390-1441) was a painter from the county of Loon, which since 1366 belonged to the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. He is considered, alongside Rogier van der Weyden, one of the principal representatives of the Flemish Primitives. Among his best-known works is the panel cycle The Ghent Altarpiece (1432), to be viewed in Saint Bavo Cathedral in Ghent. Hubert was his brother. This book aims to distinguish the personalities of Hubert and Jan and thus to humanize the mystification surrounding their persons and works.
This book was written by Elisabeth Dhanens (1915–2014), a Belgian art historian, specialized in the art of the Flemish Primitives, and more specifically in the works of the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck.
The bound book, in green half-linen with gold tooling and a dust jacket, comes in a case. The book has 400 pages with many color and black-and-white reproductions to scale, some of which are fold-out. It is an edition published by Mercatorfonds, Antwerp 1980
