Description from the seller

Orbis Terrarum Antiquus (1853)

Title
Reichard / Forbiger – Orbis Terrarum Antiquus – 5th edition 1853 – complete atlas with 20 coloured maps. The frontispiece is missing.

Description
Christian Gottlieb Reichard (1758–1837)
Orbis Terrarum Antiquus
Quondam in usum juventutis descriptus
5th edition (Editio quinta), newly edited and annotated by Albert Forbiger.
Nuremberg, Friedrich Campe & Son (Fr. Campe et fil.), 1853.

Complete copy with all 20 etched and contemporarily boundary-coloured maps.

Large-format historical atlas on the geography of the ancient world. The complete map sequence covers the ancient world as well as Hispania, Gaul, Britannia, Germania, Italy and Rome, Greece and the Peloponnese, Macedonia and Illyria, Dacia/Sarmatia/Scythia, Asia Minor, Armenia and Syria, Palestine, India, Egypt as well as Africa and Arabia. Several plates contain additional detail and city plans, including Rome, Jerusalem, Alexandria, Carthage and Athens.

The maps are printed on strong paper and provided with colored boundary coloring. At the bottom edge of the plates there is the publisher’s note “Nürnberg, Fr. Campe et fil.” as well as the designation “Orbis terrarum antiquus” and the respective plate number. On several maps the engraver J. A. Bühler is also named.

The complete sequence of 20 maps was checked individually.

Particularly interesting is a handwritten entry on the flyleaf, dated “8 December 1861.” It indicates an early ownership/provenance shortly after the atlas’ publication. Other historical handwritten signatures are found on the same leaf.

Condition
Complete set of 20 maps. The printed title page is not present.

Age-appropriate, unrestored condition. The maps show varying degrees of foxing, paper browning, and age-related discolorations, especially at the edges. The printed map images themselves are mostly clear and well preserved. The historic boundary coloring is strong and attractively retained.

The center folds show the usual signs of use typical of a large-format atlas. There are no significant losses within the map images on the present maps.

Plain brown linen/fabric binding with noticeable age- and wear-related traces. The atlas has not been cleaned or restored; paper, coloring and historic signs of use are in a seasoned state.

Please regard the numerous photos as an essential part of the condition description.
