Robert Motherwell - Collages - 2020

Published to accompany an exhibition of the American artist Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) works, this catalog illustrates the evolution of collage during his career. The exhibition includes a selection of 26 works on paper, created by the artist between 1960 and 1989. This work is defined by the coexistence of different media and techniques, and by its intuitive tearing methods, akin to the brushstrokes of Abstract Expressionist paintings. Motherwell's collages combine packing labels, torn paper, cardboard, and other materials, revealing how he viewed the painted surface as a proving ground for creating sensations without any prior point of reference.
