Description from the seller
Nineteenth-century Russian School
Russian four-compartment icon (Tetradiplon) with central Crucifixion, tempera on wooden board, unsigned, 37 x 29 cm.
Extraordinary and complex ancient Russian icon painted in tempera on a wooden board, structured in compartments (tetradiplon) around a central cross with the Crucifixion scene (Распятие Христово) and Adam's skull at the base. The icon depicts in the four main compartments some of the most famous Marian images and liturgical feasts, including the Mother of God “Joy of all who sorrow” (Всех скорбящих Радость), the Mother of God “Search for the Lost” (Взыскание погибших), and other Marian iconographies with Cyrillic inscriptions. On the back of the sturdy solid wood panel are the original reinforcing crosspieces and the dimensions hand-written (37 x 29).
Please note that, as it is an ancient sacred artwork, the object shows signs of age, wear, craquelure, and color loss consistent with its age and the devotion experienced that attest to its authenticity. All conditions are clearly visible in the photo gallery.
The frame visible in the photo is included in the lot as a pure gift from me and is not part of the sale, does not determine its value, and, due to its delicacy, is not insured. Consequently, any defects already present on the frame are not reported, and any damage to it during transport will not be considered for claims or returns. The wall-mounting system could also be removed. Glass often breaks during transport and can spoil the work. They can be removed on request at no extra cost. Please let me know if you prefer that the work be shipped without it; otherwise I cannot assume responsibility.
Shipping and Customs notes
The item is shipped from Geneva, Switzerland. For this reason, delivery times to European Union countries may be slightly longer than usual due to standard customs procedures.
In case of return of the package for an incorrect address, unclaimed package, or unpaid duties, the buyer will have to pay for a second shipment and cover return costs.
I also remind you that, since Switzerland is outside the EU customs area, import duties, local VAT and customs charges are fully borne by the buyer and will be collected by your country’s authorities upon delivery. I advise you to check in advance to avoid surprises. Alternatively, if you have the option, local pickup in Geneva is always the option I prefer and strongly recommend, as it will eliminate transport costs and ensure maximum security for the work. If you choose shipping, I will do my best to package it to protect the panel during transit.
