Akai CD-32 compact disc player, produced in Japan (circa 1988–1990). Technically in 100% good working order with a smoothly operating tray-loading mechanism and fast track recognition; optically in nice vintage condition with light signs of use consistent with the age.

For collectors and enthusiasts of early digital hi-fi equipment, the CD-32 is an interesting and sturdy player. Akai in this period used proven and audiophile-valued components: under the hood lies a reliable Sony mechanism (KSS-150A / KSS-210A) combined with the 16-bit Philips TDA1541A digital-to-analog converter with 4x oversampling (SAA7220P/B digital filter). This DAC architecture is well known in audio circles for its exceptionally musical, analog-like sound signature with much depth, a rich midrange, and the absence of the sharp, clinical edges that later 1-bit players sometimes exhibited.

The unit features a sleek front with a clear fluorescent display, numeric direct-track buttons, and an adjustable headphone output. In addition to the standard analog RCA line outputs, the CD-32 is equipped with an optical digital output, allowing the drive to be linked directly to a modern external DAC.
