Description from the seller
Old double figurative porcelain salt cellar – Aelteste Volkstedter Porzellanfabrik (Thuringia) – Mid-20th Century
Description:
Elegant and prestigious double figurative salt cellar in fine white porcelain, entirely hand-painted and enriched with rich details in genuine gilt gold. The piece comes from the renowned Aelteste Volkstedter Porzellanfabrik, the oldest porcelain factory in Thuringia (Germany) still in operation, founded in 1762.
The central sculpture, of exquisite Rococo taste, depicts a young nobleman in eighteenth-century attire, characterized by a cobalt-blue coat delicately decorated with gold interior detailing. The figure holds a flask and is flanked by two elaborately shell-shaped side basins, traditionally intended to hold salt, pepper, or spices.
The piece rests on a sinuous base richly finished in raised-relief gilt.
• Origin: Volkstedt, Thuringia, Germany.
• Mark on the bottom: Official mark with a blue underglaze crown and the historical date "1762", used by the factory since 1945.
• Mold number engraved: V20760 (clearly visible on the base near the edge).
• Period: Mid-20th century (ca. 1950).
• Style: Rococo / Neoclassical.
Condition:
Excellent vintage condition. The porcelain shows no chipping, hairline cracks, or hidden restorations. The brilliance of the gilt is splendidly preserved on the edges and reliefs, as is the intensity of the cobalt blue of the coat. The fingers of the figure and the most delicate details are fully intact.
