Aquaforte engraving by Jean-Jacques Boissard and Theodor de Bry of VIA AD AMPHITHEATRVM & VIA ISIDIS ET SARAPIDIS, depicting Regio II of ancient Rome (Coelimontana) in Roma, Italia, on an uncoloured sheet measuring 200 by 300 mm and issued under Topographia Urbis Romae.
Description from the seller
The board illustrates, in a schematic manner, the Regio III (Isis et Serapis) of Ancient Rome, placing the main historical and archaeological monuments along the outer margins of the two main streets (Via ad Amphitheatrum and Via Isidis et Sarapidis):
• The Colosseum (Amphitheatrum): depicted in a singular isometric section that shows its interior and the seating.
• The Thermal Complexes: the Thermae Titi (Titus’ Baths), the Thermae Traiani (Trajan’s Baths) and the Thermae Philippi (Philipp the Arab’s Baths).
• The Residences and Gardens: the Horti Maecenatis cum turri (the Gardens of Maecenas with the famous tower) and the Porticus Liviae (the Portico of Livia).
• The Military Structures and Arches: including the Castrum Praetorium / Miseno (quarters of the Miseno fleet), the Arcus aureus and the Arcus divi Traiani (Arch of Trajan).
Defects observed: A slight natural water groove visible on the back of the sheet, which does not affect the enjoyability of the engraved front.
